The Challenge
- Today more than 800 million people are chronically undernourished – primarily due to a lack of access because they live in poverty – a critical contributor to the global burden of disease
-
- Within the next 20-40 years the demand for food will double, primarily in developing countries, the type and nutritional quality of food demanded will change (e.g., cereals to meat and fish)
-
- Sustained growth in the agricultural sector (crops, livestock, fisheries, forests, biomass, and commodities), is required to enhance rural livelihoods by increasing on-farm income and stimulating off-farm income
